"What we need to question is bricks, concrete, glass, our table manners, our utensils, our tools, the way we spend our time, our rhythms. To question that which seems to have ceased forever to astonish us. We live, true, we breathe, true; we walk, we go downstairs, we sit at a table in order to eat, we lie down on a bed in order to sleep. How? Where? When? Why? Describe your street. Describe another. Compare."
- George Perec
Pera Film’s sixth edition of Hors Pistes Istanbul gathered under the title The Artist vs. Life captures the social and intimate narratives and observations through the personal voyages of eight artists: Narimane Mari, Frank Smith, Gurwann Tran Van Gie, Isabelle Prim, Shanti Masud, Marie Losier, Jonathan Caouette, and Cecile Paris. As each artist explores history, reality, and the subliminal under different visual languages and stories, their common denominator presents itself as a matter of standing against the norms, questioning what has been built up or presented so far within the world of the artist. Such becomes a crucial survival, to live and create in order to make sense, to rationalize, to bring order to a world of chaos, disorder, and turmoil. As Andy Warhol once claimed: “They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.”

Each memory tells an intimate story; each collection presents us with the reality of containing an intimate story as well. The collection is akin to a whole in which many memories and stories of the artist, the viewer, and the collector are brought together. At the heart of a collection is memory, nurtured from the past and projecting into the future.
When regarding the paintings of Istanbul by western painters, Golden Horn has a distinctive place and value. This body of water that separates the Topkapı Palace and the Historical Peninsula, in which monumental edifices are located, from Galata, where westerners and foreign embassies dwell, is as though an interpenetrating boundary.
He had imagined the court room as a big place. It wasn’t. It was about the size of his living room, with an elevation at one end, with a dais on it. The judges and the attorneys sat there. Below it was an old wooden rail, worn out in some places. That was his place. There was another seat for his lawyer. At the back, about 20 or 30 chairs were stowed out for the non-existent crowd.
