Magritte ou La leçon de choses
Director: Luc de Heusch
Belgium, 1960, 15', DCP, color
French with Turkish subtitles

Luc de Heusch, a passionate literary and cinema figure and a member of the COBRA movement, captured his friends and artists on film.

More than just a portrait, this short offers a portal into René Magritte’s dreamlike world, which not only appears in the film but seems to engulf it—turning the entire work into a surrealist object itself.

Screened with the support of the Henri Storck Foundation.

Magritte’s Home Movies
Directors: René & Georgette Magritte
Belgium, 1957-1967, 12', DCP, b&w
Silent

In 1956, René Magritte acquired a camera and filmed 40 shorts featuring himself, his wife, and friends. These charming and emotional films breathe life into his iconic visual world.

This program features René (1957) and Parc Josaphat (1967).

Harpya
Director: Raoul Servais
Cast: Will Spoor, Fran Waller Zeper, Sjoert Schwibethus
Belgium, 1979, 9', DCP, color
Non-verbal

Raoul Servais’ cinema is marked by constant innovation in form and technique. Harpya, blending animation with live-action, tells a fantastical tale.

It follows a man who rescues a harpy (a half-woman, half-bird creature), only to face danger as she becomes increasingly menacing.

Winner of the Palme d’Or for Best Short Film at Cannes in 1979, the film was restored by the Royal Film Archive of Belgium (CINEMATEK).

Screened with the support of Raoul Servais Collection.

Dimanche
Director: Edmond Bernhard
Belgium, 1963, 19', DCP, b&w
Non-verbal

A typical Sunday in Brussels: the guard changes, children play, people visit Cinéma Aventure.

Completely devoid of commentary, this short elevates the ordinary with extraordinary visuals, placing boredom at its core.

The film was restored by the Royal Film Archive of Belgium (CINEMATEK).

Marcel Duchamp’s Bicycle Wheel

Marcel Duchamp’s Bicycle Wheel

In 1998 Ben Jakober and Yannick Vu collaborated on an obvious remake of Marcel Duchamp’s Roue de Bicyclette, his first “readymade” object. Duchamp combined a bicycle wheel, a fork and a stool to create a machine which served no purpose, subverting accepted norms of art.
