Director: André Delvaux
Cast: Senne Rouffaer, Beata Tyszkiewicz, Hector Camerlynck, Hilde Uitterlinden
Belgium, 1966, 95', DCP, b&w
Flemish with Turkish subtitles

Adapted from the novel of the same name by Johan Daisne, the film follows a middle-aged teacher who leaves his town after his beloved young student moves to another city. As he begins a new life as a civil servant, memories of the past and repressed desires open a deep fissure in his mind.

Regarded as the founding work of modern Belgian cinema, The Man Who Had His Hair Cut Short blends the every day with the subconscious, taking viewers on a journey between dream and reality. Spaces become abstract, time bends, and the narrative unravels in tandem with the character’s inner voice.

The film was restored by the Royal Film Archive of Belgium (CINEMATEK) with the support of A Season of Classic Films.

Marcel Duchamp’s Bicycle Wheel

Marcel Duchamp’s Bicycle Wheel

In 1998 Ben Jakober and Yannick Vu collaborated on an obvious remake of Marcel Duchamp’s Roue de Bicyclette, his first “readymade” object. Duchamp combined a bicycle wheel, a fork and a stool to create a machine which served no purpose, subverting accepted norms of art.
