100: The Story of a Newspaper

Director: Melike Çapan

Turkish, Greek with Turkish, English subtitles

The first Greek newspaper in the history of the Republic, Apoyevmatini, is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

The story begins with the newspaper being passed down from father to son. The story continues with the distributor who made the greatest effort in the 100-year story distributing the newspaper on the streets of Beyoğlu. The story of the newspaper’s establishment is told by the former employees who made the most effort. The Greek community, its readers, tells the importance of the newspaper in their lives. Although the newspaper, which was published with limited resources, was on the verge of closing from time to time, everyone embraced this cultural heritage and did not allow it to close. In the finale, a child appears while hearing everyone’s good wishes for Apoyevmatini. The child picks up the Apoyevmatini he found on the ferry and reads it. This child symbolizes Apoyevmatini, which has reached its 100th year, surrendering to the future.

The crew will attend.

Marcel Duchamp’s Bicycle Wheel

Marcel Duchamp’s Bicycle Wheel

In 1998 Ben Jakober and Yannick Vu collaborated on an obvious remake of Marcel Duchamp’s Roue de Bicyclette, his first “readymade” object. Duchamp combined a bicycle wheel, a fork and a stool to create a machine which served no purpose, subverting accepted norms of art.

Having penetrated the Balkans in the fourteenth century, conquered Constantinople in the fifteenth, and reached the gates of Vienna in the sixteenth, the Ottoman Empire long struck fear into European hearts.
