Stephen Chambers will be in conversation with Edith Devaney,Curator of Contemporary Projects at the Royal Academy of Arts, London.

Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation Pera Museum is pleased to announce its new spring exhibition Stephen Chambers: The Big Country and Other Stories. This exhibition, curated by Edith Devaney, Curator of Contemporary Projects at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, presents a survey of Stephen Chambers’ painting and graphic works, shown alongside his vast multi-part print, The Big Country.

Stephen Chambers studied at Winchester School of Art from 1978 to 1979 and then at St Martin's School of Art, London from 1979 to 1982. He graduated with a Master’s degree from the Chelsea School of Art in 1983. Chambers won many scholarships and awards, including a Rome Scholarship, a Fellowship at Winchester School of Art, and a Mark Rothko Memorial Trust Travelling Award. He has collaborated on three dance projects with the Royal Ballet: Sleeping with Audrey (1996), Room of Cooks (1997, 1999) and This House Will Burn (2001). He was elected a Royal Academician in 2005. The artist says of his work, 'it speaks of states of mind, behaviours and sensibilities.' Critics have praised Chambers’ use of colour and his painterly exploration of his medium.

The exhibition is organised by the Royal Academy of Arts, London, with the Pera Museum. Contribution by British Consulate-General, Istanbul and British Council.

Ali Sami is born in Rusçuk in 1866, and moves to İstanbul. Because his family is registered in the Beylerbeyi quarter of Üsküdar, Ali Sami is also called Üsküdarlı Ali Sami. He graduates from the Mühendishane-i Berri-i Hümayun in 1866 and becomes a teacher of painting and photography at the school.
