Pera Museum’s talk and performance series Electronic Crossovers invites you to explore the fields that interact with electronic music!
A fruit of collaboration with Istanbul-based musical collective ÆVOM, “Electronic Crossovers” looks at a range of fields and disciplines that feed on and interact with electronic music, technology, literature, cinema, environment, psychology, sociology, computer games, politics, urban transformation, nature and philosophy to name a few. The October event of the series features a presentation and a live performance of live coding by RAW (Selçuk Artut, Alp Tuğan).
The plethora of roads to creativity ushered in by fast-paced technology may bring about the need to revamp the conceptual and functional definition of a musician. Sound, the basic building block of music from a morphological perspective, can easily change form via technology.
Today’s musicians compose sounds using readily available products of technology. They look for more only if they deem the available possibilities insufficient. Live coding has gained ground with recent initiatives on algorithmic music production and computer programming being mainstreamed. This new practice offers musicians a chance to develop custom programs to suit their needs and instantly modify functions, which offers a musician two roles: a user and a producer of technology. The musician is able to identify an instrument, approaching it as a new concept and expanding it with new technical developments.
This presentation will look at how to integrate live coding techniques and tools into a musician’s creative process and the room for authentic creativity with theoretical and practical insights.
