A Capella at Pera:
“Barbershop Istanbul”

Concert

February 16, 2019 / 17.00

Pera Museum presents a new series of concerts from January to May 2019. The second performance of the series is from A Capella at Pera, featuring Turkish State Polyphonic Choir’s principal conductor Burak Onur Erdem as the art director, will be “Barbershop Istanbul” on 16th of February Saturday at 17.00 hrs.

Join the “Conversation Session” before the concert to discuss the production of a capella music, seize a chance to talk with musicians and exchange insights. The event will focus on the “Barbershop” style of a capella rooted in the USA, detailing its background, its harmony structure, various modes of execution and how it differs from classical a capella music. Participants will also talk about their impressions and experiences in the Harmony University in Nashville, USA.

Barbershop Istanbul was founded in 2013 to practice classical and modern barbershop a capella music, becoming the first vocal quartet in barbershop style in Turkey. The quartet went onto become Turkey’s first member of Barbershop Harmony Society, the biggest international community of the style which emerged in the USA. The band performed in BKM Mutfak and Summart. In 2017, they were invited to Harmony University - Quartet College in Nashville, USA and became the first participants in the annual barbershop camp from Turkey. Barbershop Istanbul’s members are Onur Zorluuysal, Erdinç Hasılcıoğulları, Kaan Bayır and Enis Turhan.

The exhibition Look at Me! Through the exhibition we will be sharing about the artists and sections in “Look At Me!”.

From two portraits of children…

The Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation’s Orientalist Painting Collection includes two children’s portraits that are often featured in exhibitions on the second floor of the Pera Museum. These portraits both date back to the early 20th century, and were made four years apart. One depicts Prince Abdürrahim Efendi, son of Sultan Abdulhamid II, while the figure portrayed on the other is Nazlı, the daughter of Osman Hamdi Bey.
