Pera Film’s Oh! What a Lovely War program organized in conjunction to the exhibition Goya: Witness of His Time focuses on the theme of war and its casualties. Presented as part of this exhibition, Goya’s engraving series The Disasters of War illustrate war, as utterly lacking in glory; it is a vision of war without the consolation of chivalry, religion without mercy, and despair without redemption.

Parallel to this engraving series, the selected films for this program explore cinematic masterpieces centering on the disasters of wars - of all kinds. The war stories are told from a range of crucial and significant events throughout history: American Civil War, 1905 Russian Revolution, World War I, Spanish Civil War and World War II. The program explores groundbreaking methods of storytelling with great narratives and technical achievements, as well as elucidating the violence, tragedies, catastrophes and calamities claimed by war.
